OPENING NIGHT MATCH NOTES – JULY 13, 2023
Texas Super Kings vs. Los Angles Knight Riders
Grand Prairie Stadium
All-rounder Mohammad Mohsin bowled a magnificent spell of 4/8 as the Texas Super Kings registered a 69-run victory over the Los Angeles Knight Riders in the first match of the inaugural Major League Cricket championship at a sold-out Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas on Thursday. The Super Kings put up 181/6 in their 20 overs before bundling the Knight Riders out for 112 in just 14 overs.
Well, all in all, today was a huge success for Major League Cricket in the United States and for the City of Grand Prairie. The first game at the Stadium in Grand Prairie, Texas, and our team won. What could be better? The fans showed up regardless of the heat and are probably the headline for anyone who was there. It was extremely hot and sticky, but that was not the hero of the day. The game was. The temps cooled down to respectable levels as the game wore on, and the sun settled behind the building.

There are a host of storylines for today’s game. Lots of firsts today: 1st game in the refurbished stadium, 1st Cricket game in Grand Prairie, and 1st game of the new American League in the country. All of this created a great air of excitement here that you could just feel. The fans were excited to bring their families to a live Cricket game.

The stadium appeared to be almost a hundred percent ready except for a few items around the place. You can tell that they have worked very hard to get it ready to make sure all of the folks attending were comfortable and as safe as they could be. But it didn’t stop the game from going on. The fans showed up by the thousands: families, friends, and anyone else they wanted to bring, including infants, children, and old folks. Three and four generations of Cricket fans were able to come and see a live game of Cricket today here in Grand Prairie, Texas.

The event started with Ross Perot Jr. bowling out the first pitch. An aerial flyover of a vintage prop plane put on a heck of a show with loop-d-loops and a great dive into the sky that put out a gasp from the crowd as he stalled and started dropping to the stadium. A large American flag was brought to the field by Grand Prairie police officers and firemen with the assistance of several event staff. It was unrolled and opened up. The flag was held in place while the Grand Prairie Police honor guard carried out the American and Texas flags, accompanied by both teams, onto the field. The National Anthem was sung by a young lady with a beautiful voice.

LA won the toss and elected to bowl first, putting the home team on the field. In the 20 overs, Texas scored 181 runs minus 6 wickets. Very exciting game. The one thing I didn’t understand was that if a batter hit a home run and knocked it out of the park, when the ball was retrieved, it was thrown back out onto the field. I asked a young man about it, and he explained that the ball, as it is worn by continued play, is an advantage to the pitching team to use the same ball.

As a fan of baseball and understanding Cricket a little better, I will most certainly have to get to more Cricket games during this round-robin style tournament and look forward to seeing more games.

Tickets are still available for some of the remaining games of the tournament. If you have never watched a game of Cricket, I highly recommend that you get a ticket and get out to the stadium over the week as the weather cools down and catch one. Also, if you have never seen a game of Cricket, I found this article very informative, with graphics that display the basics of the game very well. Texas Highways
