On September 24, 2023  The Dos Equis Pavilion in Fair Park was ablaze with excitement on the 2023 Autumn Equinox as fans gathered for Jellyroll’s Backroad Baptist Tour, a sold-out event that drew nearly 20,000 people. Despite the scorching heat, the promise of communal healing and a vibrant performance attracted fans from all walks of life.
Kicking off the evening was Josh Adams Meyers, captivating the crowd with an extended
version of “Living On A Prayer” and other classics. He interacted enthusiastically, even
venturing into the audience to distribute VIP upgrades and award prizes to ardent
followers on Instagram.

As the night unfolded, the venue transformed into a vibrant nightclub atmosphere, with
green lights casting a captivating glow. The stage came alive with the entry of
Memphis-based Three 6 Mafia, featuring DJ Paul and Juicy J, who sent the audience into a nostalgic frenzy with hits like ‘Sippin’ on Some Syrup’ and ‘Poppin’ My Collar’. Surprise
appearances from Lil White and Lil Flip, and a heartfelt tribute to a late member of the
Memphis rap group enriched the night.

After Three 6 Mafia’s electrifying set, Josh Adams Meyers returned to keep the crowd
energized while the stage was set for the headliner. The anticipation grew as a Whitsitt
Chapel light box sign displayed poignant Jellyroll lyrics, setting a sentimental tone.
Jellyroll took the stage amidst an amber wash of light, opening with “The Lost” and
expressing gratitude to his early fans. He then delivered a powerful rendition of “Hate Goes
On,” pouring his heart into every bar. The emotionally charged performance continued with
Halfway to Hell,” is a song seeking clarity, growth, and salvation.  Jellyroll’s authenticity in creating music for real people with real problems was palpable, resonating deeply with the crowd. During the performance of “She,” he addressed addiction and advocated for the legalization of recreational cannabis, urging incentives for doctors to prescribe medical cannabis.

Amid the excitement, a fan in the pit who owned a clinic held a sign pledging to combat
opioid addiction, highlighting the concert’s impact. Lil White and other guest artists joined
the stage for more songs that underscored a message of resilience and triumph over
personal challenges.

However, the intense heat of the night took a toll on several fans, and amidst the energetic
atmosphere, medical emergencies arose. Multiple fans faced heat exhaustion, requiring
urgent medical attention.

Medics rushed through the crowds and over barricades to aid those who fainted, reminding
everyone to prioritize safety and hydration amidst the fervor of the concert.
Despite this, The Backroad Baptist Tour showcased the triumph of the human spirit. It was
a night of healing, nostalgia, and resilience, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all
who attended, reinforcing the belief that no one is too far gone.
