Todd Rundgren: ME/WE 2024 Tour

The Majestic Theater in Dallas, a stunning venue, was the perfect setting for Todd Rundgren and his band on June 12, 2024. As a first-time visitor to the theater and a casual listener of Todd Rundgren’s music (yacht rock), I was unsure what the night had in store for me. Little did I know that I was about to embark on a musical journey that would leave a lasting impression.

As is often the case in bustling cities, parking in Dallas proved to be a challenge. I managed to find a spot just a block away, but the steep $25.00 fee left a bitter taste. Such a price tag is more commonly associated with stadium or large venue events, not with the intimate setting of the Majestic Theater. The lot attendant, who was only in his booth until the event started, was a further disappointment. I had hoped that for the amount paid, at least the attendant would have stayed throughout the event. But as they say, opinions are like… well, you know the rest.

The Majestic Theater is beautiful. If you have not attended anything there, I highly recommend that you do. For starters, they opened their doors on April 21, 1921. (My birthday is April 21…so you know it will be spectacular!) The interior has that romantic feel of the 20’s. The lobby has a winding staircase that takes you to the second floor. A staircase will take you to the lower level, where the bathrooms are hidden. With the plush red carpeting against the ivory walls, it’s like being transported back in time. Mirrors line the walls and create a depth to the lobby. The sconces on the walls and the huge chandelier in the center of the room took my breath away when I walked in. I honestly felt like I was not dressed properly. It felt like I should have been wearing a ballgown and my great aunt’s pearls instead of jeans and my vans.

Inside the actual theater, it was just as spectacular. The seating was perfect. All the chairs were red velvet. The chairs were so comfortable. They had this movement where you could rock and lean back a little. It wasn’t those stiff, uncomfortable seats. The legroom was perfect as well. I’m 5’6 and had plenty of legroom. The men sitting behind me were tall, and they never kicked the back of my chair, so I would dare to assume that they would say that they had sufficient legroom as well.

Of course, there is the side balcony seating that you would expect to see in such a grandiose venue. I’m assuming that these are premium seats. The balcony is two-tiered, so there is room for plenty of people to watch amazing shows.

Todd Rundgren and his band took to the stage at 7:45 p.m. To kick off the evening, they played “I Think You Know.” With no breaks in between songs, he and the guys kept the music flowing with tunes like “Secret Society” (a Utopia song), “Hit Me Like a Train,” and “Kindness.”

However, when they broke into “Buffalo Grass,” the place went crazy. Everyone was cheering, hands were in the air, and you could feel the excitement. The excitement was different for this crowd than any other concert I attended. Typically, people are on their feet. With this one, only about three to four songs were being played where people were dancing on their feet. The rest of the time, they were sitting in their seats.

The band played twenty songs with no breaks. Todd did not talk about songs or where the band was headed with any future music promises. It was just straight-out music. Which, honestly, I appreciated. Sometimes, some lead singers talk too much, and I’m not there to hear that; I’m there for the music. This is what everyone got…MUSIC.

When he and the band played the encore, they did have the house on its feet. With “I Saw the Light,” “The Last Ride,” and “Fade Away,” the place was ecstatic about why they were there.

Although I am not a huge Todd Rundgren fan, I will say that he did put on a good show. His music was different from the heavy metal I prefer. His music that night was more jazz, a little soul, a dose of psychedelic-laced tunes, and, as I told a friend, baby-making music.

It never hurts to experience something different. And on that night, I had a new experience.
